"Definitely Not Wearing Any Underwear" Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man

Much controversy exists over secrecy in the Mormon religion. Mormon under garments are particularly mysterious to those of us outside the church. I have often heard these garments referred to as “secret underwear”. Now personally, I think all underwear should be secret. I don’t really want to know what anyone is wearing under their clothing! OK… some of you do – especially if those in question are Megan Fox or Brad Pitt. But really when thinking about your average Joe walking down the street, I hope not. So, why does anyone care that these unattractive bits of clothing are private? I think the answer lies in the fact that outsiders don’t know anything about how, why, or when a person receives these lovely gems. I have actually done some research and am thrilled to share these little bits of garment knowledge with all of you.

There is actually a website called: mormon-underwear .com and here is what it says:

“To millions of Mormons around the world, garments are a special piece of clothing worn as a symbolic gesture of the promises that they have made to God. The garment is always worn under other clothing, next to the skin. For most people who wear it, the garment takes the place of regular underwear. (For this reason, some people refer to the garment as Mormon undergarments or as Mormon underwear. Most LDS prefer simply using the term "garment" instead.)
The garment is directly related to
Mormon temples. It is there that faithful members first receive the garment after individual instruction on what it stands for and how it should be cared for. The garment is worn as part of a special ceremony called the temple endowment. The garment is worn at all times (day and night) by members as a constant reminder of the promises they have made to God in the Temple to be honest and faithful to the commandments of the Lord.”

Wow! Now you know as much as I do. If “temple worthy” Mormons wear these garments at all times then that certainly leaves all kinds of questions that I with limited knowledge cannot answer. You will just have to use your imaginations. As for me and my underwear….I choose to keep them a secret but I can tell you this with regards to the eye-catching numbers pictured above – This California girl is definitely not wearing any underwear!!!!

I often think about those garments on the hot days around here, and have great pity for the women in the "hot flash" years. Whew...

These garments are sacred. I ask that you please respect that and not post them so vigorously around your blog please. Out of respect to us and our beliefs. I dont ask that you understand I please just plead you respect them. Thank you I hope I am not offending you.

I am very sorry that this blog is offensive to you. I simply got the photo off the internet, I did not sneak into someone's home and take a photo without their knowledge.

In case you'd like to know more, not everybody who wears garments is temple worthy-it just means they have at some point been through the temple and are still trying to remember the promises made there. There are many different materials to choose from-some are cool in summer, others are warmer for winter. We handle summer just fine-it's not like they're thermals we're putting on. We can still wear shorts & t-shirts and wearing garments is a small price to pay for some beautiful promises.

Thanks Jill. I think that learning that sort of thing is great. Outsiders are curious because they seem so secret. I think my friends from outside of Utah ask me about garments more than anything else. I appreciate you sharing that with me!

it's not "secret" garments, it's sacred garments

I guess that depends upon whom is talking about them.

If you would spend half the time that you do complaining about the mormon religion and actually take time to learn about it. I think you would be much more understanding, many times people view our religion as a cult because they quite frankly don't know what they are talking about. They don't know anything about our religion. We aren't horned polygamists with tails of the devil, we are people trying to practice our religion the same as you. If you would have taken 5 minutes to talk to those missionaries that came to your house and so graciously offered you their knowledge, you would understand more clearly. I am not trying to be disrespectful, i am simply stating facts. Just because you talk to missionaries doesn't mean you are looking to get baptized, they would be more than happy to explain in more detail any questions that you have about the mormon church, whether you agree with it or not.

Ok Anonymous you are very busy commenting on this blog, but not really listening. If you had you would know that I spent quite a bit of time speaking to the missionaries at my door. They were lovely young men and we had a perfectly pleasant conversation. My blog encourages others to do the same. I have no idea where you get your idea about horned polygamists - I have never said anything about what Mormons actually believe - I have only commented upon how difficult it can be to be a minority amongst people who all believe the same thing. It would never be my place to judge another's religion. Unfortunately, I know exactly what hta feels like.

sorry, can't help but also respond to "anonymous." i'm lds but don't understand why somebody who's not lds should have to listen to the missionaries? this is a religion built around the principle of agency after all. how many mormons do you know that refuse to listen to the jehovah's witnesses when they come around? to make your point, you should be equally upset about that. how boring life would be if i could only be friends with other lds people or even people that always said the right thing. i love having a chance to get new ideas from people that have a variety of thoughts and experiences. jill, i think you do a great job of trying to stay positive in circumstances that may not be ideal.

Thanks for your kind words Jill! I really appreciate hearing from you and your understanding of how difficult it can be for my family. Please keep reading and commenting!

dear anonymous,
i spent years in the church as a devout member. however, upon reading the script about polygamy "i give unto you a new and everlasting covenant" i hurt...the beliefs i had went much further than eternity, so why are they not being practiced now? read a little further, dear friend... read pages that don't quote the book of mormon... your choice is up to you... i've been free for years now, and i'm SO much closer to God than i ever was when i was mormon... thank God for accidental readings!!!

I know that I am 2 years late on this conversation, but I am baffled I grew up around so many Mormons (in Missouri) and never knew about this. It makes sense now why they have the clothing rules that they do- to cover shoulders and to the knees.

Thanks for this enlightening post and your non-judgmental attitude.
