"They're Here"

Today I went to Costco. I would consider this biweekly experience to be fairly mundane. The thing is – and I may have mentioned this before – even mundane things can make me feel like an outsider. Costco in Sandy, Utah looks just like any other Costco ON THE OUTSIDE! Inside is a whole different matter. I shop amidst dozens of large blonde families loading their carts with Dinosaur nuggets, and more milk than my family consumes in a couple of months. I stroll by “modest dresses”, yearly food storage paraphernalia and a special display of LDS artwork. Occasionally I am taken aback by a group of polygamists dressed in stereotypical fashion. So, for those of you living elsewhere this probably doesn’t sound mundane. Your head might just be spinning around not knowing which direction to gawk at first. I am fairly used to it by now. However, today I was specifically struck by the book section. I thought I might share a small sampling of what I saw there. For some reason, I found it particularly attention grabbing.

I actually think a Jewish family handbook might come in handy occasionally, although I am positive my family would not concur.

Not my cup of tea, but OK.

From what I understand it should be made easier, so this should please a lot of people.

Remember in the glossary that Beyond the Veil is the after life. I have some friends that would love this one!

My thoughts exactly!!!

Kind of like the Junior League Cookbook for Mormons.

I admit, I am just teasing about the other books, but seriously this one really ticked me off!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure why I noticed this today. I guess it just seems that no matter where I go or what I do as long as I live in Utah there will always be subtle reminders that “They’re Here!” The truth is, however, the real Poltergeist seems to be me.

Forget the books - there's NO WINE or BOOZE in a Utah COSTCO! That's the most visible sign that "They're Here".

Sounds like the Jewish girl I know and love! Of course the books would tick you off, you are Jewish living in a predominately Morman society.
It's outlandish to anyone who is not Mormon. Sorta like us Christians putting Christmas out before Thanksgiving.
You've been there a year, I'm impressed.
You know living in Texas I find that I'm too liberal for the conservatives and too conversative for the liberals.
We need a vacation! XO S

I have actually been here almost 4 years and am still somewhat sane. There is actually a lot good about Salt Lake City, just a bit odd and frustrating at times. I am sure Texas has it's own very differnt culture. I'd love to hear about it!!!!

In Texas "too liberal for the conservatives and too conservative for the liberals"

Truer words were never said!

And as for them being "here" check my blog for the gathering yesterday. Talk about being here, from EVERY where!

Oh...and I just learned that Glenn Beck has a Phd from Berkeley. He used to be very new age/herbalist etc. Talk about making a U turn!

Glenn Beck was also a drunk and clearly that has killed all his brain cells!

I've lived in Utah most of my life and I still feel like an outsider most of the time. I just found your blog and I love it.

So glad you found the blog Mary. Please share your experiences - it helps all of the "PLU"S" to know we are understood!

I'm LDS but didn't have to think twice to see your point. I'm from Utah but spent a few years living in California to see "how the other half lives" (that's a joke) and I loved it. Both places have their pros & cons. I think religion is one small aspect about a person like how many siblings they have or what their favorite food is. It's interesting to know but there is so much more to learn and like about people. I don't always fit perfectly into the LDS culture. I'm just a fan of good people being friends with good people and not worrying so much about what religion everybody is. Glad you are getting your frustrations out in a constructive way! I got a good laugh from the book section review!

Welocme Jill. Thanks for your positive comments. It seems that most LDS people who have lived outside of Utah can appreciate my situation and laugh along with me. I completely agree that religion is only a part of what defines you as a person. When you expose yourself to all types of people, you quickly realize that there are good and bad people in every group! Please keep reading and commenting!
